Brokering appointments

Every month, the government appoints GMs, Directors, Chairmen and Managing Directors of Public Sector Undertakings. The job is performed by the Public Sector Enterprises Board (PSEB) through its Chairman, Atul Chaturvedi, the former Secretary of Steel, and its board members. Sources have disclosed that brokers are allegedly negotiating deals to fix appointments in the coveted public sector bodies. It is reported that candidates who desire to be CMD or Directors first contact some media publications which highlight their achievements in their present posts, for a price. Once the achievements are published, the probable candidate then contacts the respective minister’s or Secretary’s office. Then, the candidate tries to approach ruling party bosses. Sources disclose that a full-fledged mechanism has been developed for the appointments through the PSEB by the brokers. Of late, it has been observed that hectic hobnobbing has taken place for the selection of the CMD of the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) which is a multi-crore company. It is learnt there was a campaign run by certain candidates and they have spent millions. Are Steel Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and Secretary aware about the hobnobbing in PSEB recruitments? Is anybody listening?
